Is it hard to follow?
Tell students that today they are going to learn how to write a simple summary. Allow pairs to share their summaries with the rest of the class. They give information about things that occur in a story or event without using a lot of detail.
Take this opportunity to talk to the students about the importance of marking text as a study skill. However, it is a skill worth the time and effort as students will use it throughout their academic careers and the benefits it provides in reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
Beginning: Supply a word bank for students to use as they complete the graphic organizer. Form groups and partnerships strategically so that beginning ELs are paired with students who speak their same home language.
